Italica (Seville, Spain): use of local marble in Augustan age
2010
This study concerns 51 marble finds made of “Cipollino verde” coming from the ancient city of Italica (north of the modern city of Santiponce, 9 km NW of Seville, Spain), the earliest Roman settlement in Spain, founded in 206 B.C. The aim of this work was to determine their provenance from Greek and Italian quarries or from local quarries worked in the Iberian Peninsula. Thin-section optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, bulk rock chemistry and O, C and Sr stable isotope analyses were carried out. Results were compared with literature data on “Cipollino verde” marbles quarried in southern Euboea (Greece), Apuan Alps (Italy), Almería, Extremoz, Seville (Spain) and Évora (Portugal). T…
De Pascoli a Maria Antònia Salvà: afinitats i influències
2010

Foreign Market Entry Mode Research: A Review and Research Agenda
2017
ABSTRACTThis article gives a retrospective look at the main determinants of foreign market entry modes and examines the variables and conditions used in empirical studies in this stream of research. We found that there is an “analytical context hazard” in past studies. The findings suggest: first, future research should focus on developing and extending theories with reference to strategy dimension and market/industry environment; second, the interrelationship between the main entry mode determinants should be figured out; third, attention has to be paid to the entry modes of firms from non-developed economies in research.
COMPETITIVENESS OF LATVIAN FIRMS IN CHINA
2012
The results of the firms’ performance are one of the key aspects in the research of competitiveness. The competitiveness of firms is a concept that involves many aspects of measurement. There are many models that can be used to assess the international competitiveness of firms, including the competitiveness of foreign firms in the Chinese market. The opportunities of Latvian firms to enter China market and the capabilities of Latvian firms to compete in China have not so far been sufficiently studied. In 2010 the export volume of Latvian firms to China was 25 million EUR and more than half of it was export of raw materials. The model of SME competitiveness is used to research the competitiv…
Abstract A02: Neuroblastoma patient-derived orthotopic xenografts: Clinically relevant models for drug testing
2016
Abstract Widespread metastasis is a major problem for the treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma. Relevant neuroblastoma animal models are hence needed to study and target high-risk metastatic neuroblastoma. We developed neuroblastoma patient-derived orthotopic xenografts (PDXs) using viably cryopreserved or fresh patient neuroblastoma fragments which were implanted orthotopically into immunodeficient NSG mice. Immunohistochemistry showed that PDXs retain neuroblastoma markers and a highly infiltrative growth pattern. Importantly, we found distant metastasis to lungs, liver and bone marrow. Single nucleotide polymorphism array analysis confirmed that PDXs maintain patient-specific chromosomal…
Anaerobic oxidation of methane in sediments of a nitrate-rich, oligo-mesotrophic boreal lake
2021
AbstractThe identity of electron acceptors in promoting anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in the sediments of boreal lakes is currently unknown. Here, we studied the AOM rate of sediment slurries collected from three profundal stations of a nitrate-rich, oligo-mesotrophic, boreal lake (Lake Pääjärvi, Finland), under varying nitrate concentrations using 13C-labelling. Furthermore, vertical profiles of the sediment and porewater geochemistry, and the microbial communities (16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagenomic sequencing) were analyzed. Despite geochemical data indicating that simultaneous consumption of nitrate and methane took place at the sediment layers chosen for incubations, AOM rate…
Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Acquired Aplastic Anemia: Better Outcome with Bone Marrow as Compared to Peripheral Blood in HLA-Matched Sib…
2009
Abstract Abstract 876 Background: Transplantation of bone marrow (BM) from a HLA-matched sibling donor is an effective treatment for severe aplastic anemia (AA) with long-term survival in excess of 80%. In the recent years there were two trends in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for AA: (1) increasing proportion of transplants performed from matched unrelated donors (MUD) and (2) increasing proportion of transplants using peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBSC) as stem cell source instead of BM. A similar switch to PBSC over BM grafts is reported in leukemia transplants. PBSC grafts for leukemia are associated with higher rates of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). This …
Oxidation, efflux, and isotopic fractionation of methane during autumnal turnover in a polyhumic, boreal lake
2007
[1] We studied the oxidation and efflux of methane (CH4) in a small, polyhumic lake, Mekkojarvi (southern Finland), during 6 weeks in autumn when the stability of the water mass first weakened, temporarily restabilized, and finally mixed completely. During the summer stratification period, CH4 had accumulated in the anoxic hypolimnion to high concentrations (>150 mmol m−3). Gradual mixing of the water column during the autumn allowed access to both oxygen and CH4 by aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) deeper in the water column. Thus the bulk (∼83–88%) of the CH4 accumulated in the hypolimnion was subsequently consumed by MOB while only 12–17% was lost from the lake to the atmosphere a…
Segmenting the spectators of national team sports: the case of a pre-competition match
2015
It has become common for academics and sports marketing professionals to study and explain the heterogeneity and complexity of sports spectators' behaviours and attitudes, with numerous works addressing this topic But these surveys are more about fans of professional sports clubs (soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, etc) who attend regular season games in their favourite teams' home stadium or arena. To our knowledge, very few studies have been conducted into spectators of national teams. It is these spectators who are of the focus of this paper.
